Where the horses help do the healing

Equine Assisted Learning and Wellness

Experience the healing power of horses through our Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) and horse-based wellness programs. Each session is guided by Cartier Farms-certified facilitators and Indigenous Master of Social Work (MSW) professionals.

Our approach honours the sacred bond between people and horses-creating space for resilience, self-discovery, and emotional healing.

Why Horses?

Scientific research shows that horses can support healing from emotional, mental, and behavioural challenges, including trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Horses provide:

  • Comfort, consistency, and nurturance
  • Unconditional acceptance and non-judgment
  • Balanced energy that promotes calm and grounding

These unique qualities help nurture mind, body, and spirit-supporting a more balanced sense of well-being.

Our EAL programs can be customized for:

  • Individuals and couples
  • Families and youth
  • Community and corporate groups

Sessions are provided by Registered Social Workers and are covered through Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) and most private health benefit plans.

Reconnect, restore, and experience the healing presence of horses.

Cartier Farms EAL Program Research Studies

The Cartier Farms EAL program has been the subject of several research studies exploring how horses can facilitate healing and personal growth for participants facing mental-health, addiction and trauma-related challenges.

One key piece of research referenced on their site stems from Colleen Dell (University of Saskatchewan) and Darlene Chalmers (University of Regina) which followed 60 clients across 287 horse-encounters at four treatment sites dealing with mental-health and addictions in Saskatchewan. The participants reported feeling more open, happier and less stressed after engaging with horses. Staff also noted the clients became more engaged and better able to address difficult issues.

While a direct causal link to improved addiction outcomes has not yet been established, the researchers concluded that interactions with horses clearly added a therapeutic benefit to the conventional programming.
