Many people have access to counselling services through their extended health care benefits. The amount of coverage varies from plan to plan, so please check with your insurance provider about your coverage.
Coverage is available for psychotherapy/counselling services for all Indigenous individuals with a status number.
As of January 1, 2026 funding is available for psychotherapy/counselling services for non status individuals who attended an Indian Residential school. The children and grandchildren of non status individuals who attended an Indian Residential school may also be able to access coverage.
Funding is available for psychological assessment and psychotherapy/counselling services for Indigenous individuals ages 18 and under for assessment and psychotherapy/counselling services. To begin the process to access funding, a referral is initiated by a healthcare professional (i.e., family physician, nurse practitioner, etc.) or an education professional (i.e., teacher, educational assistant, etc.) for the requested service. Our clinic would provide a letter for the client with a description and cost estimate for the service that the client submits for funding approval.

Funding is available for psychotherapy/counselling services for Metis individuals through the Metis Health and Addiction (MHA) Program. Please contact the Metis Nation of Ontario at 1-800-263-4889 ext. 7 to learn more.
Funding may be available for psychotherapy/counselling services for people who have experienced a mental health injury in the workplace. If you feel this is the case, a claim is typically initiated by the WSIB, the employer or the family physician/nurse practitioner of the claimant.
Coverage may be available for psychotherapy/counselling services for people experiencing psychological difficulty resulting from a motor vehicle accident. This coverage extends to family members who have experienced psychological problems related to the accident as well.
Immediate funding is available for psychotherapy/counselling services for individuals who have been victims of a violent crime (e.g., domestic violence, sexual abuse, etc.). Eligible clients may also include an immediate family member or custodial guardian of a victim who is a minor. Please note that an application for psychotherapy/counselling benefits must be made within 14 days of a police report being filed to qualify for this coverage.
For people presently receiving LTD benefits, coverage may be available through your insurance company for psychotherapy/counselling services to help manage mental health difficulties if they pertain to the individual being unable to work.
Funding is available for members of the RCMP, Canadian Forces, Veterans, and their family members who are struggling with a mental health issue related to the member's service.
Funding is available for children and teens who have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Once registered with AccessOAP, an application can be made to apply for funding to access mental health services, such as psychotherapy/counselling.
Funding for psychotherapy/counselling is available for children and teen victims of internet exploitation, as well as any family members who were impacted.
